Get Your Driving Instruction Business Off to the Right Start

Automotive Blog

If you want to teach people to drive, and you'd like to go down the route of setting up your own business to do so, it's important to make sure you get off on the right foot and set everything up properly.

Starting any business can be a confusing affair, leaving you unsure of whether you're doing everything right or not. As long as you follow a few simple guidelines, you'll be able to run a successful driving school on your own terms.

Get qualified

The first and most important step is to become a qualified driving instructor. After all, there's no point progressing through creating a business and getting customers if you're not able to teach them. Don't underestimate the time it will take to study and qualify, or begin advertising your services too early, as you might let people down and damage your reputation.

Invest in equipment

To teach people to drive, you're going to need at least one car dedicated to that purpose. Small vehicles are normally used, and you may need a dual-control car for safety with new drivers. Make sure you factor in any advertising logos you want to be printed on the car's body.

Buy insurance

Your standard car insurance won't cover your activities as a driving instructor, so you'll need to obtain specific insurance. This will cover you for any eventualities while teaching people to drive, and it helps with your liability.

Choose a name

Once you have the foundations in place, you can start fleshing out your business. You might just use your own name to operate your business, but if you'd prefer to think of a professional business name, spend some time coming up with the right one.

Register your business

If you're not using your own name, you should trademark the name of your business to stop other people using it. You also need to register your business with the authorities in order to operate fully within the law. You'll also need to apply for an Australian Business Number, so make sure you do this in plenty of time, as the application can take a while to process.

Attract customers

A lot of marketing is done online nowadays, and using social media is certainly a great way to get business. It may also be worth starting your own website, even if it's just a basic design.

Don't neglect the traditional methods, however. Having flyers printed and putting an advertisement in your local newspaper is still an effective way to generate custom.
